Unintended consequences

Some one had a “great idea”. For $10 premium over the standard $30 / night mooring fee, you can reserve a mooring. Last night most / all the regular mooring were taken. Of the 15 reserveable mooring, only 3 were in use. However, several boats were anchored in the area with the moorings.

The BVI initiated a program many years ago to install and maintain moorings so as to reduce damage to the bottom in the overnight spots. For many years it was rare to see anyone anchored if there were moorings in the area. This new program may be well meaning – anyone who is prepared to pay the extra $10 per night is guaranteed a spot. It is forcing others on limited budgets or just frugal to go back to anchoring practices that are irreparably damaging this valuable resource.
